‘Tough’ – Manager leaves club amid 18-game winless run, facing drop

ABERTILLERY, WALES - 06 JANUARY 2024: Aber Bluebirds manager Lee Thomas during the 2023/24 JD Cymru South League fixture between Abertillery Bluebirds F.C & Taffs Well FC at Cwm Nant Y Groes, Abertillery, Wales

Lee Thomas has left Aber Bluebirds with seven games remaining in the Ardal Leagues.

Abertillery Bluebirds have confirmed that manager Lee Thomas has resigned from his position.

Thomas steps down after seven years in charge at Cwm Nant-Y-Groes. While he has primarily led the side throughout that period, he temporarily stood aside during key moments to allow Ben Murphy and Josh Anderson to oversee a successful promotion campaign and the club’s time in the Cymru South, though he was still a key figure among the coaching staff.

A standout moment of his tenure came in 2019, when he led the team against Connah’s Quay Nomads. Despite being the lowest-ranked side remaining in the competition, they welcomed former Manchester City defender Andy Morrison to the Abertillery Sports Centre.

Thomas successfully managed the club away from home while redevelopment work was carried out at their Nant-Y-Groes ground, which is now capable of hosting Tier Two football in Wales.

“Tough decision to hand in my resignation,” said Thomas.

“I’d like to thank all players, staff and supporters who have contributed over the past seven years. It’s been a pleasure, and I wish everyone good luck in the future at the club.”

In an official statement, the club paid tribute to his impact and dedication during his tenure.

“After seven incredible years at the club, we say thank you and farewell to Lee Thomas,” the statement began.

“Through the highs and the lows, you’ve been a constant, giving everything for the badge both on and off the pitch.

“Your commitment, passion and character have played a huge part in shaping the club’s journey.

“Through it all, one moment that will live long in the memory is lifting the Ardal League title and securing promotion to the Cymru South — a testament to the hard work, belief and leadership you brought to the team.

“You’ve been a big part of the club’s history that will never be forgotten, and you will always be welcome here — forever a Bluebird.

“From everyone at the club, we can’t thank you enough for everything, and we wish you nothing but the very best for what comes next.”

Abertillery now look set for a return to the Gwent Premier League next season, as they sit 15 points adrift of safety and 10 points behind nearest rivals Tredegar Town. With seven games remaining, their survival hopes appear slim.

The Bluebirds have endured a difficult run of form, failing to secure a victory since their Dragon Signs Amateur Trophy win over Nantyglo in October. Their last league win dates back even further, to August 16.
